Review: Rule by Ellen Goodlett

Hello there!

Here is a new review for you guys. This review is on the book Rule by Ellen Goodlett. Want to know more about it? Well, keep on reading.

“The king is dying, his heir has just been murdered, and rebellion brews in the east. But the kingdom of Kolonya and the outer Reaches has one last option before it descends into leaderless chaos.

Or rather, three unexpected options.

Zofi has spent her entire life trekking through the outer Reaches with her band of Travelers. She would do anything to protect the band, her family. But no one can ever find out how far she’s already gone.

Akeylah was raised in the Eastern Reach, surrounded by whispers of rebellion and abused by her father. Desperate to escape, she makes a decision that threatens the whole kingdom.

Ren grew up in Kolonya, serving as a lady’s maid and scheming her way out of the servants’ chambers. But one such plot could get her hung for treason if anyone ever discovers what she’s done.

When the king summons the girls, they arrive expecting arrest or even execution. Instead, they learn the truth: they are his illegitimate daughters, and one must become his new heir. But someone in Kolonya knows their secrets, and that someone will stop at nothing to keep the sisters from their destiny… to rule.

Magic, mystery, and blackmail abound in this sensational and striking fantasy debut.”

When I first heard about this book it was described as Three Dark Crowns meets Pretty Little Liars, now I really enjoy Three Dark Crowns series and I love Pretty Little Liars TV show so I was sold on this book.  As soon as Rule was released I went to the store and bought it, it was not until a few months later that I actually got to read it. Oh, boy I am so glad that I picked this book up because I had so much fun reading this book.

I can really see why this book is being compared to TDC and PLL that being said even though it has similarities to them this book stands on its own. From the synopsis we know that these three sisters have some dark secrets but once I found out what those secrets out I was shocked that these secrets are more intense than I anticipated. What was also so great about Rule is that it had a good balance on the action and these sisters trying to survive the secrets and find their blackmailer and the romance. A lot of times in fantasy books the romance overtakes the main plot of the story and I feel that Goodlett did a good job of having romance in her story but not letting that overpower the book.

One of the things that I enjoyed about Rule was the fact that the blackmailer will leave the sisters messages and I just kept thinking “this is so PLL“. I absolutely loved the ways that the blackmailer left them messages in un-conventual ways just like A does in PLL. Sometimes those ways being more intense way than A did, this is a fantasy world with magic after all.

On the subject of magic, let’s get into that a bit. The magic system in Rule is blood magic and I feel that this is a more unique form of magic in the world of Fantasy. At least I haven’t read a lot of books if any that involve blood magic as the main form of magic. The only thing is that I wish Goodlett had explained the magic a bit more. I feel that I didn’t get a full picture of how the magic system works in this world.

Let’s talk a bit about the sisters. First of all, I loved Zofi’s sass! She does not take anyone’s BS and she stands her own ground and I love that. Akeylah, I feel so much for her. What she had to go throw when she was growing up before being summoned by the king was just crazy. Ren was the sister that I connected with the least but I enjoyed reading from her perspective as well. One of the other things that I enjoyed about Rule is how the sisters’ relationship develops from the start to the end.

Overall, I thought that this was a really great debut novel and I can not wait to find out what happens next in Rise after the cliffhanger in Rule. Something else that I want to mention is that this book has a female-female romance. Also that POC representation, both of which is awesome.

I really hope that you enjoyed this review. Please let me know in the comments if you have read Rule and your thoughts. If you have not read Rule if you plan to read it now.
