This post is going to be on my spoiler-free thoughts of Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella. Now, all of you should know that Sophie Kinsella is my favorite author. SO, when she comes out with a new book I buy it ASAP. I love Kinsella’s writing and I always have a good time reading her books. When I heard about Suprise Me I was super excited to read it.
Sylvie and Dan have been together for 10 years and have the best lives. One day at doctors visit they are told that they can live for another 68 years. Learning this they start to panic a little since 68 years together is a very long time. So they come up with a plan to keep things fresh and exciting in their marriage. They will come up with little surprises for each other so that their lives will never become boring. While doing this, things go wrong and secrets are revealed that begin to shake up their marriage in a way that they did not intend.
I will start off by saying that I did not enjoy this as much as other Sophie Kinsella books. I felt that the book was too long. What I mean is that most of the book was very slowed paced which I am not used to with Kinsella. Honestly, things did not pick up until the last 110 pages. There were a few scenes that made me laugh but it didn’t last long. Usually, with Kinsella’s writing, I am laughing for most of the book.
I don’t want to just compare Suprise Me with Kinsella’s other works so I will say what I thought about this book without thinking about her other works. For one I did not fall in love with any of the characters. There was never a time where I felt connected to a character. I did wish that there was more of Sylvie and Dan’s twin girls, I thought they were adorable and wish there was more of them.
Going back to pacing, I felt that this book wasn’t as interesting or exciting as I thought it would be. Like I said things only started getting interesting the last 100 pages. I ended up having to get the audiobook because I honestly did not think that I would have been able to finish the book if I had to continue reading it on my own. I am so glad I got the audiobook because that is when I was able to fly by the rest of the book.
What I did enjoy about Suprise Me was the moments where something funny would happen. Like Sylvie and Dan trying to execute their surprises. What I would like to say is that if you are trying to get into reading Kinsella’s books I would not start with this one. I suggest Remember Me?, Twenties Girl, or Can You Keep a Secret?. Those are good ones to start with. Also, if you do decide to read Suprise Me I highly recommend you buy or borrow the audiobook, you will be able to get through it much faster. It took me over a month to read Suprise Me because the first one-third of the book was really slow. Those last 100 pages were really good though.
I gave Suprise Me three stars out of five. This book had so much potential but it just hit the mark for me. Like I said I do suggest getting the audiobook for this one. Let me know in the comments if you have read Suprise Me and what you thought.
Until next time book nerds,
