Review: A Short History of the Girl Next Door by Jared Reck

Hello there!

First, off I want to apologize for not sticking to my regular posting schedule. Which if you did not know its suppose to be Wednesdays. That being said I going to try and get back to posting regularly. Now on to why you are here my review of A Short History of the Girl Next Door (ASHOTGND) by Jared Reck. I was lucky enough to get an ARC in my First in Line box at BookCon this year. You guys I am so glad that this was the book in my box because I loved this book so much. This is the debut novel for Jared Reck and I will start off by saying that Reck did an amazing job on his first book. What is ASHOTGND about? Well, this is the story of a teenage boy named Matthew aka Matt on his life starting high school and his feelings for his best friend aka the girl next door.

What I enjoyed about ASHOTGND was the fact that it was an amazing story. Reck really knows how to get the reader to really feel what the characters are feeling. This story was also realistic and really makes you appreciate what you have and to be present. While reading this book I felt so many emotions the first laughing so much because a lot of funny things happen to Matt because well he is an awkward teenage boy. The other emotion was sadness, at one point something happens and my heart just broke for Matt. I honestly can not imagine going through what happened in his life. I think Reck did an IMG_9271amazing job at making the reader really feel the pain that Matt is going through and you really feel for him. I am telling you guys for about half the book I was balling my eyes out, so when you read this book have a box of tissues at hand because you will need them.

The pace of the story I felt was done well and I felt that everything had a purpose to drive the story forward. I did not feel that there was any part that the story could have done without. This book is only 265 pages and in those few pages you really start to get invested in these characters and the story wraps up well even though this is a short book. I also gotta say one of the best parts about this book was the chapter titles. It’s always fun when books chapters have titles.

I gave ASHOTGND four stars out of five. This was a great debut novel and I will recommend this book to anyone that wants a good short read that makes you laugh and really hits you in the heart. Honestly, this was a great read and I am so glad I was able to get an ARC. Let me know in the comments if you are planning on reading this book when it comes out on September 26th. Also, this is Booksplosions book of the month for October so I am so excited to see their live show and see what they thought of the book. One last thing when you start this book don’t forget your box of tissues.

Until next time book nerds,
