Finally! I have finished reading Hunted by Meagan Spooner. I started this book around mid-February. I can not believe that it took me so long to read this book, it took me over a month. This post is going to be my spoiler free review of Hunted. I got an ARC at New York Comic Con 2016. That said this review will be based on the ARC. I do not know what changes were made for the finished copy. Hunted is out now so you can pick up a finished copy today. Hope you enjoy!
Hunted is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which is the reason why I picked up this ARC at NYCC. Yeva is not like the other girls in her town, Yeva feels at home in the woods hunting. She longs the days of when she would hunt with her father. So when her family loses all their wealth and have to return to the cabin by the woods Yeva is slightly happy to be back. Then, one day her father does not return home from the woods and that is when Yeva goes into the woods to find him and ends up finding the Beast.
I have to say I enjoyed certain aspects of Hunted but, I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to. I will start with the things I liked first. I loved reading from the Beast’s point of view. After each chapter, we will get a little bit of insight of what the Beast was thinking during that chapter. I also liked that it read like a fairy tale since it is a fairy tale retelling. Hunted also kept a lot of the elements from the original Beauty and the Beast, but at the same time, it was a new tale. I felt that there was a good balance between old and new. I also enjoyed reading how the Beast’s curse worked and what exactly happened to him. I really enjoyed the premise of the story. There were also some lessons in Hunted that really made me think. I will not say what they were because I do not want to spoil anything.
Now, the things that I did not enjoy as much. Let me start by saying that I felt the book was slow paced. It took really long for things to happen and I think that is the reason it took me so long to finish the book. Also, this was not a book that I was excited to get back into. There are books that I can not stop reading and I have to force myself to stop. That was not the case with this book, which is sad because I really wanted to love this book. I felt that certain scenes could have been made shorter so that the pacing could pick up. Even though there were only two things that I did not enjoy about Hunted it weighed heavily on my rating.
I gave Hunted 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. I did not love Hunted, I feel that it had areas where it could have improved, but I did enjoy certain aspects of the story. Let me know if you have read Hunted and your thoughts on it.
Until next time book nerds,
