Review : Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Hello there,

This post is going to be on my thoughts on Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I had been looking forward to this book ever since I finished Winter by Meyer which I read January 2016. I absolutely fell in love with the Lunar Chronicles so I was looking forward to finally reading Heartless. Heartless is Meyer’s first book outside of the Lunar Chronicles world as well as her first stand-alone book. What this book is about is the story of a girl named Catherine who we all know today as the Queen of Hearts. All Catherine wanted to do was open a bakery with her best friend but that is not what the world had planned for her.
My thoughts on Heartless is that it was a decent book. I did not fall in love with it as much as I thought I was going to. I went into this having very high expectations because I have loved Meyers other works so much. I did enjoy the journey of this story and meeting some of the major Alice in Wonderland characters prior to the events of Alice in Wonderland. It was fun not only learning the back story of the Queen of Hearts but also of other AIW characters. I did really like some of the characters but there were others that I wanted to fullsizerender-jpg-4strangle. The main one being the King of Hearts. I have never read AIW so I do not know how the King of Hearts is in the book but he was just so useless. I really do not blame Catherine for not wanting to marry him. That is one of the things I love about Meyers writing is how she writes characters and you start to feel so passionate about them whether you love them or hate them.

One of the things that I had a problem with was the pacing. The first half of the book felt very slow paced and I had trouble staying interested and to continue reading. About half way into the book it did get a bit more fast paced but I still had trouble staying interested. I also felt that it was predictable I was able to predict one of the main plot points in Heartless which usually I do not really predict things right. The ending also felt rushed, I wish that it was more spaced out because it went from 0 to 100 real quick ( I hope that makes sense I am trying not to give spoilers). All in all, I felt that Heartless was a decent book, it wasn’t something that I fell in love with but

I did enjoy going into this world. I will explain more of my thoughts in my spoiler review so look out for that soonish. I gave Heartless a 3.7 stars out of 5. Like I said I did not love Heartless but there were things that I really did enjoy about Heartless. If you have read Heartless let me know how you felt about it.

Until next time book nerds,
